Read: Annihilation, by Jeff VanderMeer.

This was brilliant - so brilliant, in fact, that I took a day off writing so I wouldn’t just go ahead and accidentally ape VanderMeer’s style. There’s something so brilliantly simple to the whole thing. Told through the eyes of a biologist, it begins in quite dry terms as a field report of sorts, and slowly morphs into something quite different. There are elements of the paranormal in here, and science fiction, and southern noir, and even a little horror, and it’s powerfully intoxicating. The best book I’ve read in a long time.
