Finished/starting.

I almost feel rude saying this, but I wasn’t that impressed by Dune, even though I think I was supposed to be. Sure, there are some stellar parts to it - everything feels consistent, it tackles the headlong rush of religion and science well, and there are some remarkable displays of world-building that other SF writers (me included) could stand to learn from… but at the end of it all, I just felt a little dispirited. There was nothing really relatable, besides flashes of emotion - while every character felt consistent, and (though it took some time to realise this) well-defined, they were all positions that felt utterly alien. There was no hook, and maybe it makes me greedy and overly-mimetic to expect something to relate to, but it just left me a little cold.

Looking forward to the next. Aside from anything, it’s shorter.
