December 26, 2013 Eimear Fallon

Watched: Big Fish and I Love You, Phillip Morris.

Christmas turned into a big gay Ewan McGregor mashup. There are worse ways to spend the day. Brief notes, because I’ve seen both of these before and watching films in a room filled with a bickering family is hardly a zen environment:

  • There are two moments in Big Fish that fuck with me every time, even though I’m not an avid fan of the film itself: the field of daffodils (above), and the story Billy Crudup tells his Dad at the end. Such a powerful film about death, and the power of fantasy, and trusting those who have lived longer.
  • I underestimated how uncomfortable watching Phillip Morris would be with my family. Not that they’re homophobic - I just forgot that there’s a scene early on where an unknown man yells “come in my fucking ass” while Jim Carrey rails him from behind. That was a little embarrassing.
  • These are both good, fluffy films with big emotional moments.
