Watched: Hesher
- Well, this was an odd one.
- I expect Devin Brochu (who, despite not being the eponymous Hesher, is easily the film’s lead) to go places. He already has surprising range at this age.
- I haven’t seen films try and get humour and pathos across at once for a while. This does so extraordinarily well. Never before have I teared up at a story about having your left testicle removed.
- There were some iffy moments in this, as you might expect from a film with a punk’s-not-dead-fuck-everything approach - there are a couple of slurs, and an unfortunate discussion early on that comes with a big ol’ trigger warning. I’d say it’s testament to the rest of the writing, and the consistent attitude, that these seem more like blips on an otherwise clear radar than tainting the film as a whole.
- This is more about childhood anger, and coming to terms with loss, and the catalysing effects of strangers than anything else. Humour is definitely present throughout, but as a vehicle rather than an end in itself.
- It’s a bit overtly-indie at times, but this was surprisingly uplifting and entertaining, given the subject matter.
