Third film today. Phew. Observations:

  • I had no idea this was directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. If I had, I might have watched it sooner.
  • Tom Hardy is a brilliant actor. This was constantly threatening, gleefully manic, but at the same time incredibly controlled; it’s as much a biopic of the man himself as it is a piece designed to showcase Hardy’s talent. The last ten minutes in particular are gold.
  • Did anyone else feel any Hunter S. Thompson parallels? The odd glasses, the crazed logic, the hallucinatory life - it’s tenuous, but feels like it’s there.
  • This was so odd, but at the same time presented in such a way that you never question it. It’s so tightly-presented. Even the music - huge orchestral riffs and pounding electro in the most unremarkable environments - was perfectly in sync to the mood of the film.
  • Honestly, this was fantastic. I remember nearly seeing it when it first came out five years ago, but passing it up in favour of Che; I’m glad I got around to it.
  • This is also my last film today. My eyes need a rest.
