Watched: Melancholia
Observations:
- Kirsten Dunst is mesmerising in this. I’m opening with that because this is certainly a flawed film, but she’s consistently incredible throughout.
- Sometimes, I felt the premise was a bit over-laboured; yes, depressed people are calm in the event of disaster, but so what? At its best, the film really got to grips with that and explored how an attitude like that can impact on the lives of others; at its worst, it just seemed to be circling a drain.
- God, those wedding guests were loathsome. But horribly true to life.
- It’s funny - I’m coming out of this with no real interest in seeing Lars Von Trier’s other work, but I still found this fascinating. It just felt despite him at points, rather than because of him.
