Watched: Monsters University
There is such a distinction in the difference between how this movie comes together and how Wreck-It Ralph is formed; that isn’t to say that the latter is bad (it’s a delightful film that gets a bit confused in its last act) but that this film is a reminder that Pixar are masters at their craft. Every frame of this is a visual spectacle, and none of the gags fall flat. There’s even a reference to Carrie.
I’d agree with the (few) naysayers in saying that this doesn’t quite have the emotional heft of Monsters, Inc, but there’s still a powerful story here. It’s about feeling for the little guy, and it teaches the strong to recognise their weaknesses. There’s an unbelievably tender scene by a lake in the human world, where I had to choke back a sob. This sort of film imparts wisdom to kids, but also reveals the sorts of truths that grown-ups often forget.
Really glad I watched this. I haven’t smiled so hard in weeks.
