Watched tonight: Top Secret!

Observations:

  • You don’t really get films like this anymore. Maybe self-awareness isn’t cool (though I’m seeing Seven Psychopaths tomorrow, and apparently that’s a film that’s very aware of what it is), but the sort of comedy where the plot serves the gags (and not the other way around) tends to be absent these days. Comedies have to have heart, apparently, and while that means there are a lot of emotionally satisfying comedies, it also means that we don’t have as much media whose pure intent is to make us laugh.
  • Damn, Val Kilmer used to be hot.
  • I knew that this would be the same director as Airplane! before I googled it - in fact, before I saw either. The exclamation mark gives it away.
  • Fun fact - Christopher Villiers, who plays Nigel, has appeared in the British soap Emmerdale 95 times between 2006 and 2008. He was also in Kidulthood. A thriving career, then.
  • That final line/visual gag at the end is fantastic.
  • Very funny, and very different to anything I’ve seen recently.
