Watched: 3:10 To Yuma

Observations:

  • This was really well-acted. Sometimes the script was a little sparse, and Christian Bale could have done with a little more charisma to match Russell Crowe’s, but it was really well put together.
  • The standout, for me, was Ben Foster, who plays (for lack of a better word) Crowe’s second-in-command; he’s gleefully horrible and commands the screen in every frame he’s in. Also, he has a pretty snazzy jacket.
  • I’m not usually a massive fan of Westerns (they’re drawn out a little too long; they repeat the same ideas over and over) but here there were a few moments of experimentation that kept things thrumming along - the moral ambiguity of Crowe’s character was far more fascinating than any man with no name. Likewise, seeing Bale struggle with his conscience is fascinating.
  • The guns in this are quite something.
