Watched: The Crucible

Observations:

  • Hadn’t read (or seen) the play, but it’s easy to get that this is an allegory for McCarthyism without even looking it up. Mob mentality terrifies me more than buckets of gore or singular-minded murderers (though, I suppose, there’s one of those here too), so this freaked me out.
  • Daniel Day-Lewis really likes yelling passionately. It’s a relief he’s good at it.
  • Suggested double bill, to see quite how much sinister craziness can go on behind Winona Ryder’s eyes: Black Swan.
  • A few familiar faces, too. There was that guy who was Anthony Hopkins’s Dad in The Remains of the Day, that lady who’s in a lot of TV, and Martin Chuzzlewit.
  • It’s hard to tell, because the function for a lot of these characters is [screaming hysterically], but it feels like a very solid cast. The leads in particular are electrifying.
  • Not what I expected, and very, very good.
