Watched: The Road to El Dorado (2000).

Apparently the two male leads in this film were originally written as a gay couple, and parts of it show - they bicker and joke around with each other, but there’s a strange level of emotional intimacy between the two that you don’t often see in films for kids.

As for the film itself, it’s fun, and sweet, and incredibly pretty, and that’s enough. I mean it. I know that if I really cast a critical eye on this film, I’d be thrown by the way it sexualises its female lead, and a little uncomfortable about the way the indigenous people are portrayed (though the idea of the two men as White Saviors is something the film actively makes fun of), but there’s enough on the surface to enjoy without getting too deep. It’s a fun film for kids that adults can enjoy if they relax for a moment. That’ll do.
