Arden warned me off Alan Wake, citing clumsy controls, questionable face animation and an often poor script. I’m only two episodes in (structured as it is like the Christopher Nolan film Insomnia, but segmented into a TV show), but already I’m enjoying it thanks to the irrelevance of some of those elements and a differing outlook on others. The controls on the PC port are great regardless of whether you’re using a controller or mouse/keyboard setup, the facial animation is great in-game and still a bit off during the many, many cutscenes, and the plot - while ridiculous - still has me hooked. It’s very movie-like - there’s a certain narrative coherence to it all that feels a little out of place in a game, but the bits where you’re shooting monsters don’t feel like an uncomfortable break from the plot. All in all, I’m enjoying it.
