Watched: Mr. & Mrs. Smith

  • A few moments’ reflection, and I’m only now realising: the plot in this film paper-thin. Not that it matters - I didn’t watch this for an intrigue that kept me guessing at every turn - but it’s alarming how good it is at hiding that fact.
  • It mostly hides it by means of two very good actors with mesmerising chemistry. I actually whimpered when she punched him in the face. Yes. That punch. I’m trash. Don’t look at me.
  • Same with the riding crop and okay let’s move on to the
  • Soundtrack! The one thing that threw me out of this, weirdly enough, was the music - a sort of Catch-Me-If-You-Can-infused latin suite that never quite felt in sync with the beats of the film. Might just be me, though. I’ve learned to be a bit of a soundtrack snob over the years.
  • Parts of this film feel like deliberate nods to Tyler Durden (beyond, you know, Brad Pitt) - the garish yellow sunglasses, Brad Pitt’s hair, and the fact that Pitt has a similarly anarchic attitude for most of the film. Obviously, that gets subverted, but still - it’s weird to see this five (or is it six) years after Fight Club came out.
  • One final thing: I can’t help but watch this and think that it’s a decent example of why the Bechdel test is a rough model at best. Because, despite the whole sociopathic-killer-couple thing, Angelina Jolie’s character is so aspirational and never not an equal footing in this film. Yes, there’s the initial cat-and-mouse nonsense, but by an hour in you never get the feeling that one is consistently more competent in the other. They’re basically the ultimate power couple, despite the fact that I’m fairly sure the film doesn’t feature a scene where two women talk about something other than a man. Honestly, in a film like this, with such a tight focus, I’m not sure it matters.
  • This was really fun. Everyone I know has already seen it. So I’d recommend it, but I probably don’t need to.

Watched: The Tree of Life

Observations:

  • Casey, I suspect this just wasn’t your type of movie.
  • This is getting me to think a lot about the relationships I have within my own family. Maybe this sort of thing is odd these days, but we tick a lot of boxes when it comes to stereotypes (an emotionally distant but ultimately loving father, a mother in touch with her feelings and inclined towards leniency, and a son who still struggles to work out a middle ground between the two), and so do the family in this film.
  • Maybe that’s a flaw. One thing at the back of my mind, even as parts of this film were really getting at thoughts I often bury or don’t fully consider, is that families who deviate from cliché might struggle to connect fully with a film like this. Obviously, it didn’t click with everyone.
  • Terrence Malick films are always earnest with a completely straight face, usually staying right on the line and never deviating; there was a brief sequence, about three minutes from the end, where it stepped over. Not the bit on the beach, but with the protagonist’s mother and wife. A little too spelled-out.
  • This is very pretty. Do I need to say that?
  • I like the sorts of films that stay quiet long enough for you to consider what’s going on. Silence is criminally underused in film, and as a result it makes a lot of people uncomfortable - or, worse, bored. This keeps quiet a lot.
  • Not perfect, but with moments of dazzling brilliance.

Watched: Ocean’s Eleven

Observations:

  • First: in concurrence with all of this. Read that, then come back here.
  • I actually think Don Cheadle was deliberately going for the “bows and arra’s against the lightnin’” approach; so much of this is lovingly riffing off other heist films, and he wouldn’t be the first comedy cockney character. So he can stay.
  • This was made in 2001, and Brad Pitt’s still firmly fixed in Fight Club cockiness. And Matt Damon’s still doing that weird thing with his mouth. Like he’s trying to pick something out of his teeth.
  • There is so much going on behind Andy Garcia’s eyes. That last shot on his face is chilling.
  • This just seconds Andrew, and so many other people, but this film is just about perfect. Almost eerily so.
