Watched: The Signal (2014).

This is the sort of film that is anchored by its performances (which are brilliant), the cinematography (which is breathtaking), and the snappy editing (which is carefully considered), and that’s a relief, because the plot for this film is ridiculous. I do mean that those things anchor the film, though - I really enjoyed this, despite seeing that the story was stupid, because Laurence Fishburne and Brenton Thwaites were magnetic, and each shot was carefully constructed, and there was so much in the incidentals that was just enjoyable.

Apparently the key influence for this film was The Twilight Zone, and that figures - there’s so much care in establishing the atmosphere for this film, to the point where the absurd twist at the end really acts as more of a wry coda than a true ending. Seek this out, but think of it as science fiction’s Gone Girl - it’s beautiful, and the beauty carries it, but if you look too close you can see that it’s garbage. So don’t look too close.
